HOTS 24 HOUR UPDATE more fun than any human has ever had
.
as favorable as the weather was yesterday,
last night made up for it.
a lovely weather pattern settled on the hotsers…
.
the inland hurricane pattern.
a huge mass of air is making a giant circle around somewhere in central missouruh,
dipping down to the gulf to collect millions of tons of water
and then dropping that on western kentucky and southern illinois on the way up
circling over missouruh and heading back down thru kansas and oklahoma to collect more water.
.
amazingly we did not get a single call for a ride
as the hotsers,
mostly moving in small clumps of shared misery
alternately walked in pouring rain
and took any convenient shelter during the heavy downpours and thunderstorms.
but they all made it past the cutoff before morning.
.
checkins have been slow,
as the multiple dead zones,
combined with the desperate struggle to keep electronics dry
to make the routine difficult to manage.
.
crystal wheatley appears to be in the lead among the 350 runners
with kate sidoli and james turner a couple of miles behind…
.
they made it thru marion and on to fredonia during the night.
.
no one currently knows the fate of micheal wilson and kevin zuech.
(but you can be sure they are WET!)
.
the 0600 ferry found a miserable, shivering lot of hotsers waiting to cross.
and more continue to come down the steep drop into cave-in-rock to make the crossing.
.
the forecast is for this weather pattern to continue all day
and into the night.
.
.ken zemach checked in only 30 miles behind the leading 350 runners,
making up 20 miles in the first day.
john clarke and addison hendricks remain unreported.
.
one thing is sure,
the open road skills of the surviving hotsers are being sorely tested.
they are taking a beating out there.
but they are still doggedly moving towards the rock.
.
and so day two begins!
possibly no group of humans have ever had this much fun
in a mere footrace.
